Last year, Jennifer Capriati won her first singles title in 18 months in odd fashion. The third-seeded American won the 2003 Pilot Pen title when Lindsay Davenport was forced to quit midway through the championship match because of a foot injury, and Amelie Mauresmo walked off in the second set of the semifinals the night before because of an upset stomach. Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez took the doubles title.
