Amy Frazier rallied from a three-game deficit in the first set, then needed a third to beat Amber Liu in a first-round match Tuesday night at the Bank of the West Classic.
In other first-round matches, fifth-seeded Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi won a tough match with qualifier Jamea Jackson, 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 (3), and Mashona Washington upset 49th-ranked Claudine Schaul, 7-5, 6-1.
