Harkleroad advances; Farina-Elia, Zuluaga eliminated at Chase Open

American Ashely Harkleroad advanced into the second round of the $585,000 JP Morgan Chase Open on Monday, July 19, 2004.
CARSON, California (Ticker) - Twelfth seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy and No. 13 Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia could not make it past the first day of the $585,000 JP Morgan Chase Open. Farina Elia was ousted by Akiko Morigami of Japan, 6-2, 6-4, while Zuluaga was routed by German Anca Barna, 6-1, 6-1, at the U.S. Open warm-up hardcourt event Monday.

American wild cards Ashley Harkleroad and Jessica Kirkland successfully reached the second round, with Harkleroad posting a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Sinobu Asagoe of Japan and Kirkland a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Italian Tathiana Garbin. Qualifier Lilian Osterloh of the U.S. also advanced, beating Saori Obata of Japan, 7-5, 7-5.

The top eight seeds were given first-round byes. The top three seeds are Americans - Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport. First prize is $93,000.
