Ascione serves his way past Salzenstein in first round

Thierry Ascione beat Jeff Salzenstein in straight sets Monday in the opening round of the RCA Championships. Ascione, one of nine Frenchmen in the main draw of 48, was never broken in the 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory.

Salzenstein was broken twice in the first game of the opening set, when Ascione took the final four points. Ascione lost only 16 points on his serve, five on double faults. In the second-set tiebreaker, Ascione won the first two points and was never caught. He closed out the match by winning three consecutive points. It was only the 10th victory in 25 matches this year for Ascione.
