Five-time champion and top-seed Andre Agassi held off a hot start from local favorite Paul Goldstein, and advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Tuesday.
Agassi, who won last week's Cincinnati Masters, trailed 3-1 in the first set, as well as 1-0 in the second set.
Agassi has now won seven straight matches since losing in the second round to Jurgen Melzer in Toronto.
Jan-Michael Gambill also reached the second round with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Steven Koubek, sixth-seeded Alberto Martin beat Wayne Ferreira 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), and seventh-seeded Cyril Saulnier defeated Antony Dupuis 6-3, 6-4.
