Davenport Returns to New Haven for her Sixth Pilot Pen Tennis Appearance
New Haven, CT - Aug 04, 2005 The top-ranked Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player in the world, Lindsay Davenport, will provide American star power to the women’s draw at this year’s combined event as she announces her entry into Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Michelob ULTRA. The US Open Series event is part of the ATP Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour set for Aug. 19-28, at the Tennis Center at Yale.
Davenport, 29, whose injured back forced her to withdraw from Stanford and San Diego, has reworked her summer schedule to include a sixth appearance at Pilot Pen Tennis. The current world No.1 will look to add the Pilot Pen as her third title of the year after four consecutive finals appearances from 1999 to 2003.
“I’m looking forward to returning to New Haven,” said Lindsay Davenport. “I’ve had so much success here and the fans have always been so supportive of me, it’s one of my favorite tournaments to play.”
Davenport is having a stellar 2005 season with an impressive run of five consecutive finals appearances, which included titles at Dubai and Amelia Island. She also garnered quarterfinal appearances at Charleston and the French Open; and a finals appearance at Wimbledon. Davenport has 47 career WTA tour singles titles, including three Grand Slam wins (U.S. Open 1998; Wimbledon 1999; Australian Open 2000).
“Lindsay has always been a big draw at the Pilot Pen,” said Anne Worcester, tournament director. “She has been an integral part in the success of this tournament over the years and it’s especially appropriate that she will be a part of this year’s first-ever men’s and women’s combined event.”
Davenport joins world No. 3 Amelie Mauresmo; No. 6 Elena Dementieva; and No. 9 Nadia Petrova as the top-ranked players in the women’s field at the Pilot Pen.
