TORONTO (Ticker) – Japan's Ai Sugiyama advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup on Monday, beating Croatia's Jelena Kostanic 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Sigiyama became the 17th seed when top-seeded Maria Sharapova withdrew Sunday.

In other first-round matches, Laura Granville beat Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1, and Japan's Shinobu Asagoe defeated Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 6-2, 6-2.
On Tuesday, fifth-seeded Serena Williams will face France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in a second-round match. Williams is returning from an ankle injury that has sidelined her since Wimbledon.
``I'm feeling OK,'' Williams said. ``I'm still not where I want to be at, but I'm definitely feeling better than I was.''
