Maria Sharapova To Compete For World Number One Ranking At The JPMorgan Chase Open Quarterfinal At 7 p.m.

CARSON, CA (August 11, 2005) – JPMorgan Chase Open top seed Maria Sharapova has the opportunity to claim the world No. 1 ranking on the Sony Ericsson WTA tour tomorrow night (Friday, August 12), at the JPMorgan Chase Open, at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State Dominguez Hills in Carson, California. Sharapova will claim the No. 1 ranking if she defeats No. 9 seed Daniela Hantuchova and would become the first Russian woman to earn the world’s No. 1 ranking.

Sharapova would claim the No. 1 ranking from last year’s JPMorgan Chase Open champion Lindsay Davenport, who has held the top spot since Oct. 18, 2004. She would become the 15th player to become No. 1 in the history of the WTA rankings. Additional WTA No. 1 ranked players include: Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Serena Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Venus Williams, and Amelie Mauresmo. Clijsters claimed the world No. 1 ranking by winning the JPMorgan Chase Open in 2003.

Maria Sharapova bobblehead dolls will be given to the first 5,000 fans Friday night. Additional promotions include: a tennis racquet giveaway to the first 5,000 kids 14 and under in attendance for the Saturday, Aug. 13, 1 p.m. session, spectacular fireworks show following the Saturday, Aug. 13, 7 p.m. session, and JPMorgan Chase Open baseball caps will be given away at the Sunday, Aug. 14 1 p.m. finals.

The JPMorgan Chase Open is also a part of the prestigious US Open Series, which links 10 summer hard-court tournaments to the famed US Open. This year’s JPMorgan Chase Open marks the second time players competing in the US Open Series tournaments will be vying for bonus prize money at the US Open. Players competing in the “summer season” of tennis at the participating WTA tournaments will receive US Open Series points which will ultimately earn the winner of the series the opportunity to double her US Open prize money.
