Two-Time Acura Classic Champion Returns to San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 19, 2006 – Promotion Sports, Inc. has announced that Martina Hingis has entered the 2006 Acura Classic, to be held July 29 - August 6 at the La Costa Resort & Spa. In her sixth San Diego appearance, she will join a player field that includes many of the top-ranked stars on the Sony Ericsson WTA tour, including Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Nadia Petrova, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Mary Pierce, Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, Patty Schnyder, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Venus Williams.

The Acura Classic is the only summer California tournament that Martina Hingis has entered this year. She transfixed the crowd here in her 1997 debut, defeating Venus Williams, Conchita Martinez, Mary Pierce and Monica Seles on her way to winning the singles title. She also took the doubles crown that year, with partner Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. In 1999 she won the title again, defeating Venus Williams in the final.

The 25-year old Swiss superstar is making a much-heralded comeback on the Sony-Ericsson WTA tour after a three-year injury hiatus. Her achievements so far include reaching the quarterfinals of both the Australian and French Opens and winning the Italian Open, her first singles title in four years. Last month she was awarded the prestigious Laureus World Sports Award for Comeback of the Year. Currently ranked #15, she has held the world #1 ranking for 209 weeks during her career. She has won five Grand Slam singles titles, nine Grand Slam doubles titles and also took the mixed doubles trophy at the Australian Open this year. She reached seven additional Grand Slam singles finals, twice won the season-ending championships in singles and doubles and boasts a career tally of 41 singles tournament wins.

Noted Promotion Sports' Raquel Giscafré, “Martina is very special to everyone at the Acura Classic. She's been a major fan favorite ever since her phenomenal debut here in 1997 as well as a strong supporter of the tournament. In addition to her exciting on-court efforts, she has always been cooperative with sponsors, fans and the media. We're thrilled about her incredible comeback this year and can't wait to see her in action.”
