The biggest stars in tennis are hitting the courts during week three of US Open Series play, with Andre Agassi, James Blake and Andy Roddick headlining the men’s field at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C., and Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters and Mary Pierce among the players competing at the Acura Classic in San Diego.
ESPN2 will provide 12 hours of live coverage from both events this weekend, starting with the men’s quarterfinals on Friday from 3-5 p.m. EST. The men's final will air at 3 p.m. EST Sunday, followed by the women's final at 5 p.m. See below for a complete TV schedule from both tournaments.
Coming off a win in Stanford, California at the Bank of the West Classic, Kim Clijsters will be looking for a second title in as many weeks at the Acura Classic in San Diego. She'll have stiff competitiong though with Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Nadia Petrova, Elena Dementieva along with the tournament’s defending champ Mary Pierce.
Along with five-time Legg Mason champion Agassi, 2002 titlist Blake and last year’s winner Roddick, the Legg Mason field also includes past champions Tim Henman (2003) and Lleyton Hewitt (2004), as well as Marat Safin, Andy Murray and the world’s top-ranked doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan.
The US Open Series is the six-week summer tennis season linking 10 major ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournaments to the US Open. Since its inception in 2004, the six-week US Open Series has doubled television viewership and increased attendance, while generating new corporate partnerships for the sport.
Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters were the winners of the 2005 US Open Series, with Clijsters doubling her prize money at the US Open to earn $2.2 million, the largest purse in women’s sports history. US Open Series sponsors include American Express, Lever 2000, MassMutual Financial Group and Olympus.
