MONTREAL (AP) -- Tomas Berdych is the first player to reach the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup.
The seventh-seeded Czech downed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-3, 7-6 (2) in a match featuring tall, hard-serving players.
Berdych is 6-foot-5, while Karlovic is 6-foot-10.
It is the second year in a row that Berdych has reached the Rogers Cup quarters.
He'll play the winner of a match later between Ivan Dodig and Janko Tipsarovic.
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic will play Marin Cilic later in the afternoon.
