Toronto – Tennis Canada announced on Monday the seedings for the 2013 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal and Toronto. World No. 1 and two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will be the top seed in Montreal, while No. 1 Serena Williams will sit atop the main draw in Toronto. The seedings follow the ATP World Tour and WTA rankings released on Monday, July 29, with the Top 16-ranked players from the ATP and 15 of the Top 16 from the WTA heading to Canada to compete for the Rogers Cup title.
The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds – Djokovic and Andy Murray in Montreal, and Williams and Victoria Azarenka in Toronto – will be placed on opposite sections of the draw and would not play each other until the final. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will also be placed on opposing halves, with the remaining seeds dropped into the draw at random. The official draw for Rogers Cup Montreal will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, at 4 p.m. on-site at Uniprix Stadium while the official draw for Rogers Cup Toronto will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Rexall Centre. The Top 8 seeds in each tournament get a first-round bye.
"This is one of the best WTA player fields we’ve ever had as our draw will almost resemble that of a Grand Slam tournament," said Karl Hale, tournament director, Rogers Cup Toronto. "The players view the event as one of the most important ones on the calendar and will start arriving in town shortly. We are looking forward to seeing them all take the court as our fans are in for a great week of top-notch tennis."
"We have such a deep field here in Montreal this year that the fans will be in for a treat every single session," said Eugene Lapierre, tournament director, Rogers Cup Montreal. "Our tournament has always brought out the best players and we are so excited to have all the top players back in the city and ready to play for our prestigious title."
Canada’s top-ranked player, Milos Raonic, will be seeded No. 13, while the defending Rogers Cup women’s champion, Petra Kvitova, will be seeded No. 6. Among the many other seeds of note are two-time Rogers Cup champions Rafael Nadal at No. 4 and Roger Federer at No. 5, 2012 Rogers Cup finalist Li Na at No. 4 and Wimbledon victor Marion Bartoli at No. 7.
Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will take place August 2-11 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal and August 3-11 at Rexall Centre in Toronto. Tickets are available for as low as $20.
