SAN JOSÉ, CA (August 1, 2018) – Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic No. 1 seed Garbiñe Muguruza has been forced to withdraw from the event due to a right arm injury. Muguruza will be replaced in the draw by lucky-loser Anna Blinkova who will play two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka tonight at 7 p.m.

“I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realized I am not ready to play the match. I am very sorry for the fans and the tournament. Hopefully I can recover for the next events.” said Muguruza. “The facilities in San Jose are very nice, especially the courts. This is a tournament I always play at the start of the US Open Series so I hope to come back and see all my fans next year.”

“We were really looking forward to seeing Garbiñe compete here at the tournament, but the players’ health must always be the number one priority,” said tournament director Vickie Gunnarsson. “She’s one of the WTA’s bright young stars and we hope she is able to recover quickly.”
