The Winston-Salem Open has a new No. 1 seed. Last year’s finalist Tomas Berdych, currently ranked No. 6 in the world, has accepted the tournament’s fourth and final singles wild card.
The 27-year-old Czech has been in the Top 10 since July 5, 2010. He owns eight career ATP World Tour titles.
"We're extremely excited to add the No. 6 player in the world Tomas Berdych to our field," said Tournament Director Bill Oakes. "He had a great experience here last year, and that is a big part of why he decided to come back. Tomas hits the ball hard and will be a fun player for our fans to watch next week."
Berdych stormed through the Winston-Salem Open draw in 2012, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov, Steve Darcis, Jarkko Nieminen and Sam Querrey to reach the final before falling to John Isner in a dramatic third-set tiebreak. He then went on to reach the semifinals at the US Open, with a win over Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.
Berdych has had a solid 2013. He reached the quarterfinals at two Grand Slam events – Wimbledon and the Australian Open – and has reached the finals at Dubai and Marseille. He has also reached semifinals at Rome, Madrid and Indian Wells.
The 6-5, 200-pounder also led his native Czech Republic to its second Davis Cup title last winter.
